Dr. Jena Questen
Would you like to know what I feed my dogs? Today breakfast was a base of Wild Earth kibble, sprinkled with GI Fortify (for gut health), Aveddon Essentials (the most powerful antioxidant supplement commercially available), algae tooth powder to reduce dental disease, and probiotics. Wasabi also gets Chinese herbs for mobility and MSM for her joints. All of this I mix into the kibble with some kind of real food. I am all out of the big batch of food I made last week, so today they get leftovers, black beans and rice from taco night, mixed in with hot water. I forget to take as many vitamins on a daily basis as what they get every day. And now we are all sharing apple slices, because “¼ an apple a day keeps the vet away!” ™ by DrQ, hahaha!
Geez that sunrise was especially spectacular again today. It looks like I put some kind of filter on the video, but that is actually what the whole sky looked like for a few minutes, just simply aglow with the softest pinkish yellow. What a way to start the day. I am grateful for that.
I am also grateful that yesterday was another day of beautiful weather, and we got to make the most of it with the horses. I actually rode Cesar yesterday, bareback, for one of the first times since our accident in the summer of 2023 when he nearly killed me. He still has PTSD from that, and acts out with anxiety every time we have tried to ride him again after that day. I rode him bareback, and without reins so he had nothing to resist. Patti just led him around the round pen, going from cone to cone, I just happened to also be up there. He was still somewhat anxious. I suspect he needs just a little more practice to rebuild his self confidence. I did a video after the accident, inviting people to weigh in on what they thought happened which led to our accident. Because at the time, I really didn’t know. Since then, as I have continued to get better at teaching and explaining R+ to beginners, I have finally figured out what went wrong that day. I didn’t follow my own 7 Step Preflight checklist. I took his willingness to please for granted, I know that now. And I think that can happen to all of us at times. We know what we are doing, we don’t recognize warning signs in our confidence. And that I think is a part of being human. And anyone who does not admit it is likely just kidding themselves. Which is why it’s important to always be open, honest, humble, and forgive yourself when you miss something. Like I did with Cesar that night. And if you never want to have that happen to you, get your FREE copy of my checklist here https://www.resqranch.org/7steppreflightchecklist-email
I don’t get on a horse anymore without double checking this list, just to make sure I am really checking in with myself, and the horse, and not getting carried away by the rush to get a ride in before the sun sets after work, like I did that night I got hurt.
We also groomed Oliver because he now has chronic urinary problems and often has bloody urine on his legs that needs to be cleaned off. We have tried many treatments for his issue, and I have consulted with veterinary experts, and there is no good solution for what he has developed. I give him Chinese herbs for urinary issues and it seems much less, but he needs constant care to keep him comfortable. We groomed Dixie who still does not like to be touched very much so we have to be careful around her. And we groomed Sugar who’s ribs are showing a little now no matter how much food she gets. But she is the one with the terrible teeth and no one knows how old she is, and her past is catching up to her.
Today I am grateful for Dixie, and Sugar, and Oliver, and Cesar, and my volunteers, and this beautiful weather, and the team that helps free me up so that I can spend time with the animals. I have much to be grateful for. I am also grateful for the opportunity to help at my daughter’s high school play, and get the opportunity to be appreciated for showing up and helping make the show a success for the kids. It’s a funny play, and the kids put a lot of work into it in such a short time. I hope you will consider coming out to support the kids and this play. And if not, then at least plan on coming to the musical in the spring, it will be the Little Mermaid and that should be really fun!
