Dr. Jena Questen

As I write this it’s 5:50 am, and 37 F (wow pretty warm out there actually), and the sun is just breaking pale yellow over the horizon. I know that if I am lucky, it might get brilliant pink in the next probably 10 minutes, so I have to be ready to grab my phone, a carrot in my pocket, and head out to get my first look at all the horses this morning.

Yesterday at work was full of great people, patients, and kind words. It was so nice to hear “We are so grateful for you and everything your team has done”, and “Whatever you think, I trust you completely”. Those are some pretty powerful words to get to hear from people. I am so lucky and grateful for that!

I saw at least three favorite patients yesterday. Prim, a little senior kitty who recently had a bad episode and ended up in the ER with bloodwork that made it seem she was at death’s door. She is just a couple of weeks later doing absolutely great, gaining weight, and such a trooper for her fluids which are helping her feel better. I am so grateful because I truly have a soft spot for little ole kitties. They are so delicate and precious.

I also saw another dog, Biz, such a great dog who has really been through it, a lung lobe removal, he has focal seizures, Cushing’s disease, arthritis, a chronic runny nose for which he needs an inhaler, among other things. He is so lucky to have his caregiver who loves him so much. And I love that the first few visits he always had to wear a muzzle because he would tremble with fear and lash out at us with his teeth. Now he still trembles in fear, but looks deep into the eyes of his lady, and she reassures him, and he knows by now I don’t sneak up and stab him with needles ever, so he does his best, and we don’t need a muzzle anymore. I am grateful for that.

Then I also saw Takota, who has cancer which has defied all the textbooks. He went to other vets and was told the only option was chemotherapy and radiation. The clients did not want to do that. Takota would have a weird swelling on the top of his head, not even a tumor really, just a large undefined puffiness that would come and go, but that we knew was Mast cell cancer. I have never seen another case like it. Yet that was over 5 years ago and he is doing so great! He is on several Chinese herbs, other supplements, and of course we always recommend adding more fresh foods to the diet, and somehow, miraculously, through the hand of God or something we have done, the swelling has not returned. The boy is doing pretty great for his age, just now arthritis is starting to get the better of him. It is so special and I am so grateful I get to share in miracle stories like these, especially when you can see the tears of gratitude in people’s eyes because of how much they love their animals. I am so grateful for all of that.

Today, what are you grateful for? You have the choice, right now, to make this day special in some way. What will you do? What mantra will you say to yourself in the mirror? More health? More wealth? Improved relationships? It’s all there for you, if you just choose to believe in miracles, like we do at Aspen Park Vet Hospital, because we see them everyday, like Miss Prim, Biz and Takota.
Today I am grateful for cat hair in my tea cup because this way I know I am loved or they wouldn’t bother. The sunrise. That I woke up today and that I get to go outside now and hopefully have great timing so I can share a gorgeous video of the sunrise with you. I hope this brings you a little joy to your day, or a lot, and that you take responsibility for making the rest of the hours in the day amazing! Wishing you all the best!
