Banging gates is a very common issue with horses. Not only is it annoying, it can be dangerous, not to mention can destroy property. It is a behavior often characterized as 'bad' although all behavior is simply communication, and then we assign it a response depending on if we might want more or less of this behavior. For example, if you want to teach a horse tricks, and one is opening gates on command, banging the gate might be a great place to begin to train this behavior, and encourage more of it. Training is often a matter of perception, and ultimately, communication, between the horses and you. Horses banging gates are usually just asking for something, communicating the best way they can, without the ability to speak our language. Depending on how aggressively they bang the gate, may help us determine how best to respond. Regardless, yelling at them to quit it, wrapping chains on their fetlocks, or chasing them away aggressively, are all ways to stop the behavior, yes, but also communicates to your horse their opinion and communication is inconsequential, eroding their relationship with you. And since this channel is all about strengthening the human-animal bond, we want to figure out better, smarter, more effective ways to deal with this, and all other behavior 'problems you might have with your animals.

Lucky for you, my Horse Training Masterclass is now FREE, but only through March 22, 2026, so if you want to learn everything there is to know about how to use the most compassionate, scientifically effective, and safe, way to train any animal to do anything, this course is for YOU!
