Dr. Jena Questen
Welcome to Friday! 🐎 Join us for a peaceful start to the day with our beautiful rescue horses in this video. It's a serene start to the day at the ranch, showcasing Cesar bossing around the other animals, as usual! We hope you enjoy these peaceful sunrise animal videos and they help make your day just a little better!
Yesterday we had a great grooming session with many of the horses, including Oliver, Rhoen, Donkey (we like to call them the OG's), who are quite itchy as they shed their winter coat. Once they were done, they wandered off and didn't seem interested in a training session. No problem.
So then we switched gears to the next animals that showed up (or were HERE as I like to say). And this happened to first be Natalia. So we got her into a stall to munch some alfalfa hay, unbothered by the rest of the herd, while we worked to beautify her. Although, she is pretty spectacular just as she is, so grooming her is just icing on top!
Her mane was so tangled it was like dread locks. But I took my time, and allowed her to eat an entire pan of grass hay pellets with a few sprinkles of senior grain mixed in (everyone's favorite no matter their age), and she tolerated the beauty session without a fuss. We then gave her a good brushing, picked her hooves, and even painted hoof polish on all 4! She did so well. And the whole time we did it with a halter and lead rope on, with the rope just wound twice around the stall bars without actually tying her. What great practice, in a safe way, to practice being tied, without actually all the risk of actually doing so. This is an important training step in the progress with a young horse. You never want to set them up for failure by tying them fast the first few times, where if they pull back, you might have a fight on your hands, or worse, they might get hurt. This way, when the day comes when she really does have to actually be tied, like to the side of a trailer at the rodeo parade, it won't be an unfamiliar feeling for her.
Her little sister Chilli lingered around and watched us longingly. So when we were finished with the beauty session, we decided to end the session early and let her go back to her things, especially since she was so good for all the mane and tail detangling without a fuss. She deserved a break.
So then we got Chilli in the stall, with the halter and lead rope, and the pretend tying up just as before. Then, with a pan of the same treats, we gave her the same beauty session. We marveled at the amazing color patterns of her coat. She is almost indescribeable in her coloration. She was also perfectly behaved for the entire beauty session, so we decided that was enough for her, too.
I am so proud of both the little Mustang girls and how well they are coming along with their training. It's wonderful to know they have been trained all along using only positive reinforcement, and to see it working out so well with these two, absolutely beautiful, special wild mustang girls.
Today I am grateful for Chilli, and Natalia, and positive reinforcement training and all the people who came before to prove it's the best way to train any animal, to do anything. I am grateful for my volunteers who come and help me care for the animals (although we could use more). I am grateful for the sunlight filtering through the trees this morning. Besides the video I kept trying to get just good pictures because it was a particularly beautiful morning. I am grateful I can provide a roof for a displaced teen so there is no sleeping in cars again (although I am not too sure about how this is all going to work out in the long run). And I am grateful for all my animals, my family, my friends, and my community who do things like hold town hall meetings like the one I went to last night regarding affordable housing.
What about you? Are you ready to stop giving attention to the negativity in the world, and focus only on the good, and beautiful things? Including yourself? How do I know this about you? Because, you are here. And if you love animals enough to read all this, then I know you are a good, giving person, and the world needs more of you.
Welcome to Friday my Animal Loving Angel, let's together focus on our animals, and bringing more good in the world. For what you focus on, grows, so together, we can make this world, a kinder, gentler place for us all.
Make it the best day ever, and be sure to tune in tomorrow so I can update you on how this mornings training session goes! And if you have not yet, please get your ticket to our Kentucky Derby fundraiser, it's a week away! I am excited for the Run for the Roses, and the chance to spend time with other people who truly care about animals, including horses. Have a wonderful day and God bless!
