🐶🐱🐓🐟 **What’s Cooking with Q Today? One Fresh Meal for Dogs, Cats, Chickens, Koi… AND People!**
What if you could cook one pot of delicious, fresh, whole food and share it with almost the entire family—two-legged, four-legged, feathered, and finned?
That's exactly what I did with this latest batch!
As a veterinarian, holistic practitioner, animal trainer, and lifelong animal lover, I believe nutrition is one of the important foundations of health and longevity. This is a look inside my own kitchen at what I actually prepare for my own animals—and yes, we humans eat it too!
🥕 **WHAT WENT INTO THIS BATCH:**
• 2 large fresh sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped
• About 6 large carrots, peeled and chopped
• ½ onion
• ½ head of garlic, chopped and smashed
• ½ sweet pepper
• ½ green pepper
• 2 cans garbanzo beans, drained and thoroughly rinsed
• 2 cups dry quinoa, cooked separately
• 1 box prepared vegetable broth
• 2 vegetable bouillon cubes
• Approximately 4–6 cups additional water
• A small amount of oil for sautéing
🍲 **HOW I MADE IT:**
I started by heating a small amount of oil in the bottom of a large soup pot and sautéing the onion, garlic, sweet pepper, and green pepper until everything was thoroughly cooked.
Next, I added the rinsed garbanzo beans, chopped sweet potatoes and carrots, followed by the vegetable broth, bouillon, and enough water to create a hearty soup consistency.
I cooked everything for approximately 45–60 minutes, until the sweet potatoes and carrots were completely tender.
Separately, I cooked 2 cups of quinoa using approximately 2 cups of water for every 1 cup of quinoa, along with a little bouillon. Once cooked, I stirred the quinoa into the vegetable mixture.
🌱 **ONE POT—LOTS OF SPECIES!**
🐶 Our dogs enjoy this fresh food as a fresh food topper on their kibble.
🐱 We smash some up for our cats and mix in with their regular cat food.
🐓 Our rooster gets to enjoy it, too.
🐟 For our koi, I blend and purée some of the mixture, freeze it into small cubes, and use those cubes as part of their feeding.
👩🍳 And don't forget the humans! This is also a delicious sweet potato, chickpea and quinoa soup that makes a wonderful meal at home.
🌿 **A NOTE ABOUT GARLIC**
You'll notice that I use a relatively small amount of garlic spread throughout this very large batch. Garlic is an ingredient used by some holistic veterinarians and animal caregivers as a nutritional or herbal supplement.
There is also conventional veterinary guidance cautioning against garlic and other members of the Allium family because sufficiently high exposures can cause toxicity in dogs and cats. Dose, concentration, frequency, the individual animal and the rest of the diet matter.
This video shows you what **I actually prepare for my own animals**. It isn't a recommendation that every animal should receive garlic or this particular recipe. If you're interested in incorporating garlic or other holistic nutritional approaches into your animal's diet and aren't comfortable determining whether it's appropriate, discuss it with a veterinarian familiar with your animal and its complete diet.
⚠️ **IMPORTANT NUTRITION NOTE**
One recipe should not be assumed to provide complete nutrition for every species—or even every individual within a species.
Dogs, cats, chickens, koi and people have different nutritional requirements. Any long-term diet needs to provide the appropriate balance of protein and essential amino acids, fats, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients required by that particular animal.
That's one reason I love sharing these videos: **feeding fresh food isn't about blindly copying a recipe. It's about understanding nutrition and thinking about what we're actually putting into our animals' bodies.**
