Heavy Panting or Heatstroke? A Critical Difference

When the weather warms up, it’s a joy to spend more time with our pets. But it’s also a time to be vigilant about their safety. Panting is a dog’s natural way of cooling down, but when does it become a life-threatening sign of heatstroke? Understanding the difference is crucial.

Normal Panting

Panting helps dogs regulate their body temperature. They cool themselves by evaporating moisture from their tongue and mouth.

Signs of normal, healthy panting:

  • Panting subsides relatively quickly with rest and water.
  • The dog is alert and moving normally.
  • Gums and tongue are a healthy pink color.
  • Proportional to activity level and temperature.
  • Signs of normal, healthy panting:

Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a severe emergency that causes organ damage and can be fatal. If you see these signs, act immediately.

  • Collapse or loss of consciousness.
  • Glassy eyes and a dazed expression.
  • Stumbling, weakness, or disorientation.
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea.
  • Thick, foamy saliva.
  • Bright red or very pale gums.
  • Excessive, frantic panting that is not calming down.

What to Do

If you suspect heatstroke, every second counts.

  • Move your pet to a cool, shaded area.
  • Offer cool (not ice-cold) water.
  • Cool them down slowly. Use a hose or wet towels on their paws, belly, and neck. Avoid ice, which can constrict blood vessels.
  • Get to a veterinary hospital immediately.
